Open PhD Student Position

PhD position at INSA Lyon on the study of energy consumption in cellular networks

  • Subject: Energy consumption measurement and modeling in 5G and beyond cellular networks
  • Dates: 3 years funding, starting date between December 1, 2021 and February 1, 2022
  • Location: CITI-Inria, INSA Lyon, Campus LyonTech La Doua, 56 Boulevard Niels Bohr, 69603 Villeurbanne, France

We are inviting applications for one PhD student position on energy consumption in cellular networks at the CITI laboratory at INSA Lyon. The position is funded for three years, starting from December 2021 at the earliest. The successful candidate will join the Agora research team at the Inria premises within the Campus LyonTech La Doua, in Lyon, France. The research activity will be carried out under the supervision of Razvan Stanica.

The candidate will conduct research on the study of energy consumption in 5G and beyond cellular networks, with a focus on measurement and modeling. The objective is to produce highly accurate energy consumption models which account for user mobility and traffic demand. In a second time, the most energy consuming mechanisms will be targeted, proposing solutions to reduce their overall impact, while preserving the network performance. To that end, the canidate will have access to a cellular network platform based on the srsRAN software suite and to programmable-SIM smartphones.

Requirements for this position include:

  • MS or equivalent in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related areas
  • Strong background in wireless networking
  • Strong algorithm design and software implementation skills
  • Fluency in written and spoken English

For applications, please contact Razvan with the following information:

  • Short cover letter indicating the candidate's research interests, achievements to date and vision for the future
  • CV including a detailed list of projects realised by the candidate
  • Contact details of 1-2 referees
