  • (28.12.2020) The internship work of Zhiyi Zhang, co-supervised with Fabrice Valois, will be presented in March at IEEE WCNC 2021. The conference will take place in Nanjing, China, but Zhiyi will present his work virtually.

  • (25.09.2020) My project proposal on the deployment of mobile base stations for future cellular technologies received funding from the ANR. Therefore, project DEMON will start in Spring 2021, for a duration of 3.5 years.

  • (30.07.2020) Second PhD defense of a busy month. Abderrahman Ben Khalifa will defend his work with the title "Medium Access Control for Dedicated IoT Networks". The external members for this defense will be Cong Duc Pham, Antoine Gallais, Nancy El Rachkidy, and Mickael Maman.

  • (06.07.2020) Today is a big day, Rodrigue Domga Komguem will defend his PhD thesis with the title "Autonomous Wireless Sensor Network Architecture for Vehicular Traffic Monitoring at an Intersection". This is a joint PhD between INSA Lyon and University of Yaoundé 1. The external members for this defense will be Nathalie Mitton, Bernard Tourancheau, André-Luc Beylot, Marcel Fouda, René Ndoundam, and Thomas Djotio.

  • (07.06.2020) The collaboration started around the PhD thesis of Jad Oueis still produces nice results. The study on the robustness of power maps in cellular networks, a collaboration with Yigit Ozcan, Catherine Rosenberg, and Fabrice Valois was accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management.

  • (25.05.2020) The story behind the CamComSim simulator has been selected as one of the best papers at ACM MSWiM 2019 and now benefits of an extended version in Computer Communications. This is a collaboration with Alexis Duque, Hervé Rivano and Adrien Desportes.

  • (07.04.2020) In these strange times, we are trying to help by computing a virus propagation risk factor for different geographical areas, using mobile phone data. The project SafeCityMap is supported by the Inria Covid mission, and it represents a collaboration with Aline Carneiro Viana and Artur Ziviani.

  • (11.01.2020) The study on the use of carrier sense in the context of dedicated IoT networks, the PhD topic of Abderrahman Ben Khalifa, will be summarized in a paper accepted at IEEE VTC Spring 2020, to be held in Antwerp in May.

  • (07.01.2020) From January 14, for 2 weeks, I will be in Fes, Morocco, to teach a Master level class on mobile network architectures at INSA Euro-Méditérranée, the moroccan branch of the INSA group.

  • (14.11.2019) On November 21, at INSA Lyon, I will defend my HDR thesis, entitled "From Networks to Data and Back Again: A Story of Wireless Networks in the 21st Century". This will summarize my research for the last 7 years, in front of a jury composed of André-Luc Beylot, Andrzej Duda, Isabelle Guerin-Lassous, Xavier Lagrange, Mahesh K. Marina, Catherine Rosenberg, and Fabrice Valois.

  • (20.10.2019) The first paper resulted from the PhD thesis of Romain Pujol, co-supervised with Fabrice Valois, was accepted at the conference ICT-DM 2019, to be held in Paris in December.

  • (18.10.2019) On November 5, together with Francois Gagnon and Diala Naboulsi, we will organise a workshop on future flexible and autonomous cellular network architectures, in the context of the Entretiens Jacques Cartier, at ETS Montreal.

  • (31.07.2019) Two journal papers, with results from the PhD thesis of Rodrgue Domga Komguem, were accepted in the last few days, one in Springer Wireless Networks and the second one in MDPI Sensors. This means we now have a green light for Rodrigue to defend his thesis, which I co-advise with Maurice Tchuente and Fabrice Valois, in a collaboration between INSA Lyon and Université de Yaoundé 1.

  • (30.07.2019) All the tools for the performance evaluation of LED-to-camera communications developed by Alexis Duque during his PhD thesis, in collaboration with Hervé Rivano and Adrien Desportes, will be discussed in a paper, accepted at ACM MSWiM 2019, to be held in Miami in November.

  • (08.07.2019) The work on Wi-Fi channel width configuration, initiated during my visit at the University of Waterloo, with Saber Malekmohammadi and Catherine Rosenberg, was accepted for publication at IEEE LCN 2019, to be held in Osnabruck in October.

  • (01.06.2019) From June 24 to June 28, I will attend the yearly ResCom summer school, to be held in Anglet. This is an early event organised by the French computer networks community, and this year the topic will be the mathematical modelling of computer networks.

  • (06.02.2019) The first paper from the PhD thesis of Abderrahman Ben Khalifa, co-supervised with Hervé Rivano, will be presented in April, in Manchester, at IFIP Wireless Days 2019.

  • (18.01.2019) A part of the work we did on core network placement, with Jad Oueis and Fabrice Valois, was accepted at the conference IEEE WCNC 2019, to be held in Marrakech in April.

  • (20.11.2018) After struggling to find a suitable date, Jad Oueis will defend his PhD thesis on "Radio Access and Core Functionalities in Self-deployable Mobile Networks" on November 27. The external members for this defense will be Claudio Casetti, Hakima Chaouchi, Xavier Lagrange, Vania Conan, Serge Fdida, and Nancy Perrot.

Her work on mobility control of UAVs carrying cellular base stations has been accepted at the WAIN 2018 workshop, co-located with IFIP Performance 2018, to be held in Toulose in December. This is a collaboration with Chaoyun Zhang, Paul Patras, and Fabrice Valois.

  • (20.09.2018) It is now official: Alexis Duque will defend his PhD thesis named "Bidirectional Visible Light Communications for the Internet of Things" on October 9 at 14h. The external members for this defense will be Emmanuel Chaput, Anne Julien-Vergonjanne, Josep Paradells Aspas, Luc Chassagne, and Valeria Loscri.

  • (07.03.2018) Our work on the use of mobile data analytics for mobile edge computing problems has been accepted at IFIP Networking 2018, to be held in Zurich in May. This is a collaboration with Marco Fiore, Angelo Furno, Alberto Ceselli, Stefano Secci, and Marco Premoli.

  • (01.02.2018) Third submission is a charm! Diala Naboulsi's work during her PhD thesis on a new type of handovers in Cloud RAN networks has been accepted for presentation at IEEE Infocom 2018, to be held in Honolulu in April. Also contributors to this paper were Marco Fiore ">Assia Mermouri, during her excellent internship at the lab, Hervé Rivano and Marco Fiore.

  • (16.01.2018) The first edition of the Global LiFi Congress will take place in Paris on February 8-9 and we will be present, with a contribution by Alexis Duque, in a collaboration with Hervé Rivano and Adrien Desportes.

  • (02.11.2017) Yota Katsikouli joined the group as a post-doctoral fellow, to work on different issues related to mobile traffic data, funded by an Inria fellowship.

  • (10.10.2017) The paper "Network-aware User Association in Public Safety Oriented Mobile Networks", co-authored with Jad Oueis, Catherine Rosenberg and Fabrice Valois has been accepted for presentation in the 1st ACM CoNEXT Workshop on ICT Tools for Emergency Networks and DisastEr Relief (I-TENDER 2017), to be held in Seoul, Korea, on December 12.

  • (10.09.2017) From September 15 to October 15, I will be visiting Catherine Rosenberg's research group at the University of Waterloo, Canada.

  • (05.08.2017) The paper "On the Energy Efficiency and Performance of Neighbor Discovery Schemes for Low Duty Cycle IoT Devices" has been accepted for publication in the 14th ACM International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Wireless Ad Hoc, Sensor, and Ubiquitous Networks (PE-WASUN 2017), to be held in Miami Beach in November. This is a joint work with Junaid Ahmed Khan, Romain Pujol and Fabrice Valois.

  • (03.08.2017) New results from the Fed4PMR project will be presented at the 28th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC 2017), in Montreal. The paper is titled "Core Network Function Placement in Mobile Networks" and is co-authored with Jad Oueis, Damien Lavaux, Vania Conan and Fabrice Valois.

  • (29.07.2017) For the second year in a row, we will be present at the ACM Workshop on Visible Light Communication Systems (VLCS 2017), to be held in Utah in October, together with ACM MobiCom. Alexis Duque will present the paper "SeedLight: Hardening LED-to-Camera Communication with Random Linear Coding", co-authored with Hervé Rivano and Adrien Desportes.

  • (16.05.2017) The collaboration with Angelo Furno, now a research scientist at IFSTTAR, continues. Our paper, titled "Fusing GPS Probe and Mobile Phone Data for Enhanced Land-Use Detection", co-authored with Nour-Eddin El Faouzi and Marco Fiore wil be presented at the 5th IEEE International Conference on Models and Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems (MT-ITS 2017), to be held in Naples in June.

  • (14.05.2017) I am no longer accepting reviews for (or submitting papers to) journals which perceive publication fees, but do not provide open access to the papers: IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. I am no longer accepting reviews for (or submitting papers to) journals from publishers with an aggressive policy: Hindawi and MDPI.

  • (30.03.2017) The first publication from the Fed4PMR project has been accepted for publication in IEEE Communications Standards Magazine. The paper, titled "Overview on LTE Isolated E-UTRAN Operation for Public Safety", is a collaboration with Jad Oueis, Damien Lavaux, Vania Conan and Fabrice Valois.

  • (19.12.2016) Our work on visible light communications for IoT, "Off-the-shelf Bi-directional Visible Light Communication Module for IoT Devices and Smartphones", will be demonstrated by Alexis Duque at the 14th International Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks, EWSN 2017, to be held in Uppsala, on February 20-22.

  • (26.11.2016) Continuing the series of works on mobile traffic analysis, the collaboration with Angelo Furno, Marco Fiore, Cezary Ziemlicki and Zbigniew Smoreda, which takes place in the frame of the ANR ABCD project, was accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, under the title "A Tale of Ten Cities: Characterizing Signatures of Mobile Traffic in Urban Areas".

  • (25.11.2016) The paper "Joint Spatial and Temporal Classification of Mobile Traffic Demands", co-authored with Angelo Furno and Marco Fiore, was accepted for publication at the 36th Annual IEEE International Conference on Computer Communications, INFOCOM 2017, to be held in May in Atlanta.

  • (24.11.2016) The first workshop on smart cities communications and networking, organized by the French Rescom community, will take place on January 11 at Sophia Antipolis, in the prologue of the Rescom Days. You can submit presentation proposals by December 16.

  • (02.11.2016) Abderrahman Ben Khalifa joined the group as a Ph.D. student, to work on machine learning approaches applied to medium access control in IoT networks. He is funded by the Spie-INSA IoT Chaire and by the Fed4PMR project.

I will give a talk about our work on combining short range RF and VLC communications in vehicular environments.

  • (05.02.2016) The work on the random access procedure in LTE networks, started two years ago with Inès Keskes, and later continued through a collaboration with Soukaina Cherkaoui and Hervé Rivano has been accepted for publication at the IFIP Wireless Days 2016 conference, to be held in Toulouse, France, on March 23-25.

Jad Oueis joins the team to work on self-organizing professional mobile radio networks, while Alexis Duque starts exploring the use of visible light communications in smart cities. Also, Anh-Dung Nguyen joins the ABCD project as a post-doc.

  • (10.09.2015) The project "Mobile Traffic Signatures in the Urban Landscape", proposed together with Angelo Furno and Marco Fiore, has been selected among the 10 finalists at the Telecom Italia Big Data Challenge. The three of us will participate to the Big Data Jam event, in Rome, on September 21.

  • (15.08.2015) Together with Angelo Furno and Marco Fiore, we will contribute with an invited paper, "A Comparative Evaluation of Urban Fabric Detection Techniques Based on Mobile Traffic Data", to the 7th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Advances in Social Networks Analysis and Mining (ASONAM 2015), to be held in a few weeks in Paris, France.

  • (10.08.2015) The paper "Large-scale Mobile Traffic Analysis: A Survey", co-authored with Diala Naboulsi, Marco Fiore and Stéphane Ribot, has been accepted for publication in IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials.

  • (03.07.2015) After a long work, the first results of our study on cellular network offloading are starting to appear. A preliminary study will be published at the 1st International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry (RTSI 2015). The paper is a collaboration with numerous colleagues: Patrice Raveneau, Marco Fiore, Mathieu Cunche, Sandesh Uppoor, Hervé Rivano, Zbigniew Smoreda (and we certainly forgot a few contributors in the authors list).

  • (03.06.2015) The Handbook of Research on Social, Economic, and Environmental Sustainability in the Development of Smart Cities was published. The UrbaNet team participated with a chapter on "Wireless Access Networks for Smart Cities", co-authored by all the team members.

  • (07.06.2013) The "Adaptive Behavior and Cloud Distribution" - ABCD project received funding from ANR (the French National Research Agency) and will start in the Fall 2013, for a duration of 3 years. This multi-disciplinary project is led by researchers in the PHARE-LIP6 team at Université Paul et Marie Curie, and involves partners from Orange Labs, Télécom ParisTech and Ucopia. The CITI-INRIA UrbaNet team is represented in the project by Marco Fiore and myself and will work on the study of user mobility and on ressource allocation by taking into account the dynamics in service consumption observed in the cellular network.

  • (23.05.2013) The "Privacy on the Move" (Priva'Mov) project received a grant of excellence from the IMU Labex and will start in the Fall 2013, for a duration of 3 years. This multi-disciplinary project is led by Sonia Ben Mokhtar, CNRS researcher in the LIRIS-DREAM research group, and involves partners from INRIA Privatics, EVS-ITUS and LET-ENTPE. The CITI-INRIA UrbaNet team is represented in the project by Hervé Rivano and myself and will work on the collection and analysis of wireless network traces, with an application to cellular traffic offloading.

  • (01.12.2012) The paper "Capillary Networks: A Novel Networking Paradigm for Urban Environments", practically the position paper of the UrbaNet team, will be presented at the 1st Workshop on Urban Networks (UrbaNe 2012), a workshop associated with the 8th International Conference on Emerging Networking Experiments and Technologies (ACM CoNEXT), and to be held on December 10th in Nice, France.

  • (05.11.2012) Between November 20 and November 23 I will be in Dublin, Ireland, attending the 5th edition of IFIP Wireless Days. During this stay, I will also visit the Hamilton Institute.

  • (15.10.2012) Between October 21 and October 25 I will be in Paphos, Cyprus, attending the 15th ACM International Conference on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems (MSWiM 2012) and the 9th ACM International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Wireless Ad Hoc, Sensor, and Ubiquitous Networks (PE-WASUN 2012).

  • (01.09.2012) I am happy to announce that starting today I joined the Telecommunications department at INSA de Lyon as an associate professor, and the CITI laboratory and the INRIA UrbaNet team as a research scientist.

  • (20.07.2012) Together with André-Luc Beylot and Emmanuel Chaput, we will contribute with an invited paper, "Loss Reasons in Safety VANETs and Implications on Congestion Control", to the 9th ACM International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Wireless Ad Hoc, Sensor, and Ubiquitous Networks (PE-WASUN 2012), to be held in October 2012, in Cyprus.

  • (16.05.2012) The paper "Properties of the MAC Layer in Safety Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks" is now published online and will appear in the May 2012 issue of IEEE Communications Magazine.

  • (19.04.2012) On April 25 I will attend the CITI Lab seminar organised at the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon, and I will give a talk entitled "Congestion Control in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks"

  • (20.11.2011) My PhD thesis, "Congestion Control in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks" has been nominated for the Léopold Escande prize. This prize is awarded each October to the best PhD thesis over the three schools of the Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse, and only the best 15% of all thesis are nominated.

  • (16.11.2011) Tomorrow at 14h I will defend my PhD thesis at ENSEEIHT (Salle des Thèses).
